On our longest hike in Big Bend National Park we hiked around fifteen miles with 2000 feet of elevation gain, the longest and most strenuous hike we did. Our destination was the south rim of the Chisos Basin and we hiked a loop, following the Laguna Meadow trail to the south rim and then the Boot Canyon and Pinnacles trails back. This was taken in Boot Canyon, one of the few places in the Chisos Mountains where standing water can be found.

This was the trail we followed returning from the south rim of the Chisos Basin in Big Bend National Park. The Boot Canyon trail follows a stream bed where there is often standing water, lush plant growth and numerous birds including the rare Collima Warbler. From the place where this photo was taken the trail drops into a narrow canyon that is a cool refuge from the heat of the desert.
