House Wren

In the spring of 2019 I put up some bird houses, hoping to attract Bluebirds. We ended up with a family of House Wrens in one and a family of Tree Swallows in the second and Sparrows (soon evicted) in the third. This is the female Wren looking a bit worse for the wear and keeping an eye on me and my camera.

This is the female of a pair of House Wrens that nested in one of our Bluebird boxes last year.

This tiny little bird is a House Wren, in this case the female. She was not far from her next in one of the Bluebird boxes we had put up last year.

I put up Bluebird nesting boxes early this spring. We did not get any Bluebirds, but we did get a pair of House Wrens in one of the boxes. They are tiny birds, only 4.5 inches (12 cm) long and range all across lower Canada, the USA, Mexico and the Caribbean. Here, I think, is the female, not because she is visually distinguishable, but she is the one who appears to be sitting on and guarding the eggs. On sunny days she sits on the top of the next box or nearby fence and on cooler days is in the box most of the time. Her constancy has allowed me to get these photos.

This House Wren, probably the female, was sitting on the fence near the next box when the photo was taken. On sunny days she sits without moving much either on the box or on the fence. This was a windy as well as sunny day and it was the wind ruffling her feathers.

This is a House Wren, probably the female, at the entrance to her next box. The box was built to attract Bluebirds, but the Wrens are using it.
