I should have posted this last week on the first day of autumn but forgot. Taken on one of our daily walks, it is just a few Aspen leaves that are backlit.

Last July I hiked in the Colorado Rockies with two of my brothers. This was the beginning of the first trail we were on, the Maroon-Snowmass trail which took us through Aspen groves as we started to climb to Snowmass Lake. The day started sunny and warm but became cloudy and cool.

Quaking Aspen, Populus tremuloides, is a common tree in the cooler western and northern areas of North America. It often forms groves such as this, all the trees the same clone and growing from root buds. These were photographed in the Colorado Rockies near Maroon Lake.

The first full day of our hiking trip to the Colorado Rockies was spent exploring the area. The days was overcast and wet but we hiked some short trails. This is a Quaking Aspen trunk with the trails of water drops making patterns on the bark.

These emerging Aspen catkins were the only sign of spring we were able to find until last week Friday when we found our first wildflower. We probably would not even have noticed these except that we have waited so long for spring and were watching for any sign of its coming.

As we drove through Ten Sleep Canyon we found the Aspen changing color and stopped for a few photos. These are the Trembling or Quaking Aspen of the American West.
