Window Trail

I've only a few more photos to post from Big Bend National Park and from the Window Trail, the last trail we hiked in the park. The plant on the right is a Havard Agave. Having bloomed the main plant dies back and you can just see the new plant emerging next to it and behind it.

One of our favorite plants in Big Bend National Park was this beautiful agave. We photographed them many times, here on the rocks along the Window Trail.

Candelilla

Candelilla, the Wax Plant and a member of the Euphorbia family, has a long history in Big Bend National Park. Its waxy coating was harvested by poor Mexicans who crossed the border into the park illegally and to whom park officials often turned a blind eye. That industry has declined in Big Bend but the wax is still harvested in parts of Mexico for use in the cosmetics and food industries. The plant has also been used to treat sexually transmitted diseases as its species name indicates.

Lechuguilla is an Agave that is very common in Big Bend National Park but found only in the Chihuahuan desert. This example was photographed along the Boot Canyon trail in the Chisos Mountains.

Saturday we explored the Gold Coast of Queensland and New South Wales. One of the places we hiked was Burleigh Heads National Park and these flowers were photographed there. We though them very beautiful but discovered they are considered to be a noxious pest when we looked them up. The plant is a succulent and is native to Madagascar. In Australia it is a garden escape.
