Artist's Paint Pots

Finishing our tour of the Artist's Paint Pots area of Yellowstone we come to the mud pots near the top of Pint Pot Hill. The walk through this area is about a mile from the parking lot and involves a short climb up that hill to the mud pots from which one loops back down to the lower area and the features there. Mud pots, areas of boiling mud, are found in different places in Yellowstone. Here the mud is white or gray. In other areas it is black or reddish. One of the times we were here the mud was splattering all over the boardwalk and we had to be careful it did not get on us. The other insets show the boiling and bubbling mud as well as the view from Paint Pot Hill near these features.

This is some of the boiling mud at Artist's Paint Pots in Yellowstone National Park. We had to dodge some of the globs of mud that were being thrown up by this feature when we took this photo. The mud pots are on the side of Paint Pot Hill, a short hike and climb from the parking area.

This is the view from Paint Pot Hill in Yellowstone National Park. A short hike to the hill and a short climb up the hill reach this view and the mud pots beyond.

Named for the red algae around the geyser, Blood Geyser is one of the hydrothermal features in the Artist's Paint Pots area of Yellowstone National Park. It is along the walk through the area at the base of Paint Pot Hill. The walk is about a mile and takes you across the geyser basin and up and along the side of Paint Pot Hill to the mud pots which are the main feature of the area. Though small the area is interesting and beautiful and a "must stop" on the way through Yellowstone.

This hot spring, unnamed as far as I know, is in the Fountain Paint Pots area of Yellowstone National Park. Its colors and the mud pots on the hill above give the area its name.

This is the Artist's Paint Pots area of Yellowstone National Park on a cold September morning when the steam from the hydrothermal features made is almost impossible to see or breathe (the steam is full of hydrogen sulphide).

The thermal activity that has killed these trees is evident in the photo. The geothermal features in Yellowstone National Park change from year to year and when they arise in a new area they kill the vegetation.

These trees were killed not by fire but by geothermal activity. They are along the trail into the Fountain Paint Pots area of Yellowstone National Park.

In our tour of Yellowstone National Park we are exploring the northwest quadrant of the lower loop and have come to the Artist's Paint Pots area. The area is small but has numerous geothermal features including the mud pots that give the area its name. The photo was taken on a chilly morning and shows how steamy these geyser basins can be on a such a morning.

This is Blood Geyser in the Artist's Paint Pots area of Yellowstone National Park. It is so-named for the reddish deposits the geyser produces. It was photographed in the morning the day we spent in Yellowstone on our way to Michigan.
We are at present in northwest Iowa staying with friends and will go on with our travels tomorrow or Saturday. After a cloudy and rainy day yesterday it is sunny and pleasant again today and would be a great day for some sightseeing.

These orchids, Hooded Ladies' Tresses, Spiranthes romanzoffiana, were photographed along the trails in the Artist's Paint Pots area of Yellowstone National Park. They are very common in wet areas in the park.
On another note, my time on line will be limited the next few weeks since we are moving across the state of Washington to the Spokane area. We'll be busy unpacking and getting our new house ready during that time.
