In April we hiked the South Kaibab trail in Grand Canyon National Park to Skeleton Point, a hike of around seven miles with 2000 feet of elevation loss and gain, to Skeleton Point. This was the view at that point.

In April we were in Grand Canyon National Park and hiked the South Kaibab trail to Skeleton Point, the relatively level area to the left of the photo. From Skeleton Point the trail drops further down into the canyon and to the Colorado River. That part of the trail is visible near the center of the photo.

A mule train on the South Kaibab trail in the Grand Canyon. The mules are used to bring both supplies and tourists to the bottom of the canyon and mules are used because they are more sure-footed than horses.

Taken from the South Kaibab trail int he Grand Canyon. This photo is a reminder of our desire to hike to the bottom of the canyon, something we hope to do in the very near future. The trail we followed partway into the canyon can be seen on the left of the photo.

Over a year ago my wife and I were in Grand Canyon and the last afternoon of our stay there we decided to hike part of the South Kaibab trail into the Canyon. We only went as far as Ooh Aah Point, but decided that on a future visit we wanted to hike to the bottom of the canyon. We tried to do so earlier this year but were prevented by winter weather in the park. Here is part of the upper South Kaibab trail.

We had hoped on our recent visit to Grand Canyon National Park to hike the South Kaibab trail to the bottom of the canyon but were prevented by a winter storm. This was the South Kaibab trail when we hiked part of it last year.

We are home again after driving straight through from Michigan to Washington, a total of 2000 miles (3200 km). We left Thursday evening and arrived home last night about 10:00 pm. We were in ten different states and through three different time zones. The photos are from last year's visit to Grand Canyon National Park when we hiked part of the South Kaibab trail and saw the mules they use to bring tourists and supplies to the bottom of the canyon. We only hiked a part of the trail, however. This year when we were back to Grand Canyon we intended to hike the whole trail but were prevented by snow and ice, so hiking to the bottom of the canyon is still on our list of things to do and we will have to visit the park again, perhaps in the autumn.
