Taken by my wife as we left the Alaska Ferry in Whittier. We would rent a car there and explore the Kenai Peninsula before returning to Whittier and then Anchorage.

In 2015 and in celebration of our 40th wedding anniversary, we traveled to Alaska via the Alaska Ferry arriving in Whittier after five wonderful and relaxing days on the ferry. From Whittier we traveled to the Kenai Peninsula and then to Denali National Park.
Maynard Mountain and Learnard Glacier

Maynard Mountain and Learnard Glacier are near Whittier, Alaska. This photo was taken near the start of the Portage Pass trail, a trail we hiked on one of our two visits to Whittier. Maynard Mountain is 4050 ft (1234 m) and one of the dominant peaks in the area. It is part of the Chugach Range, but by no means the highest peak in the range.
Turnagain Arm

This was taken from the train when we took the Alaska Railroad from Whittier to Anchorage and looks out over Turnagain Arm while the tide was out. The trip was wonderful, relaxing and cool after a hot day of hiking, though I'm not sure other passengers appreciated our unwashed state.
Prince William Sound

This was near the beginning of our hike up the Portage Pass trail just outside of Whittier. I could not find a name for the creek, however. It flows from Divide Lake at the top of the pass down into Prince William Sound, or, as this part of it is known, Passage Canal.
Summer Evening Near Turnagain Arm

This photo was taken from the train as we traveled from Whittier to Anchorage, most of the trip along Turnagain Arm. Though that beautiful arm of the sea is not visible in this photo, it was just beyond the trees in the photo and we were able to see the sunset over the arm.
Dwarf Fireweed

In other respects resembling its much larger cousin, Dwarf Fireweed or Riverbeauty Willowherb, is only a foot or so tall and is considered a distinct species. It grows primarily in northern regions around the globe and is an important food source for native people. All parts of the plant are edible and it is the national flower of Greenland. This example was photographed near Whittier, Alaska.
On another note, my commenting and visits will be sporadic for a few days. We will be traveling to eastern Washington to visit our handicapped son and then going on to Mount Rainier to meet and hike with my brother, Tim, whom some of you know from Ipernity. Friends will be house-sitting for us and we'll be back sometime Monday evening.
Alaska Railroad to Anchorage

After touring the Kenai Peninsula we returned to Whittier and traveled, as originally planned, from Whittier to Anchorage via the Alaska Railway, a wonderful trip. The evening was one of the nicest of the whole trip with perfect weather and gorgeous scenery. We were in an observation car and the train was air-conditioned and comfortable, a huge bonus after a hot and tiring day of hiking and before an all-night drive to Denali.
Divide Lake

This is Divide Lake at the top of Portage Pass near Whittier, Alaska. We had nearly a whole day after returning to Whittier from the Kenai Peninsula and hiked the Portage Pass trail. the view here is to the north and Prince William Sound would be below but could not be seen from this vantage point.
Portage Glacier and Lake

While in Whittier waiting for the train to Anchorage we hiked the Portage Pass trail, a part of the Iditarod race route. This view is from the top of the pass and is of Portage Glacier and Portage Lake below it, the lake about a mile away from where we were standing. It was very dull and photography was difficult and so this was the best I could do. If you look closely you can see a tour boat on the lake at the foot of the glacier.

Prince William Sound

The town of Whittier is at the upper end of Prince William Sound and is the ferry port for Anchorage, which is about 90 miles north. Our trip ran into a number of scheduling difficulties and we ended up in Whittier with a whole day ahead of us while waiting for the train to Anchorage. We used the time to hike to Portage Pass and its views of Portage Lake and Glacier. This photo was taken near the beginning of that hike. The town of Whittier is a round the corner to the right and the cruise ship is not the ferry we took to Whittier but was docked in Whittier for some hours before going on to destinations unknown to us.
