On the morning of day two of our Mount Baker climb we arrived at the top of Coleman Glacier at the Coleman-Deming Saddle, visible in the lower center of the picture. From the perspective of the photo, Coleman Glacier falls away to the right and Deming Glacier is visible on the lower left. The peak is Mount Colfax and Puget Sound with the Olympic Mountains is visible in the distance behind the peak. We had just come up the rocky ridge in the lower center of the picture, part of the Roman Slope. We were putting our crampons back on for the last climb to the top when this photo was taken.

The Shadow of Baker

This was taken early in the morning on the second day of our Mount Baker Climb. At this point we were still crossing and climbing Coleman Glacier and had been climbing for over an hour and half with the Black Buttes (see previous photo) on our right and Mount Baker ahead and to the east. When this picture was taken the sun was just coming up behind Mount Baker to the east (in the opposite direction from the picture). We were looking back west and taking pictures of the sunrise colors in the sky over Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands when this shot was taken. We did not recognize it at the time, but this is the shadow of Mount Baker being thrown many miles away on the western horizon by the rising sun. A friend who saw this picture pointed that out.

San Juan Sunset

This was taken just a couple of hours ago from Oyster Dome in the Chuckanut Mountains and looks out over Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. Son Edward, another friend and I are planning on climbing Mount Baker in a couple of weeks and decided to do the Oyster Dome trail this evening as part of our conditioning for the climb. We ended up going with a group that included my wife and number of other friends and did the seven mile round trip in a bit under four hours. We started at 6:00 and had to come down in the dark which seriously delayed us, but the sunset at the top made the difficulties of the descent worthwhile.

Puget Sound Sunset

This sunset photo was taken late last spring from Fort Ebey State Park on Whidbey Island and looks across Puget Sound to the Olympic Mountains. At one point while the sun was setting there was a golden glow on the horizon. I do not know the explanation, other than perhaps there was a break in the cloud cover, but the sunset that evening was extraordinarily beautiful.

Deception Pass is a waterway between Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands in the in the straits of San Juan. It connects Skagit Bay with the straits and was named by Captain George Vancouver in 1792. This photo was taken from the Deception Pass bridge which connects the two islands. The bridge is 177 feet high and was built in in the 1930's. Some of our children and grandchildren visited over the holidays and I was out with our son-in-law on a photoigraphic expedition.

Killer Whale

When our grandson was staying with us earlier this summer we took him whale-watching and saw quite a number of Killer Whales or Orcas. This is one that surfaced near the boat and this is the best picture I got on the trip. There are around 80 Orcas that are resident in Puget Sound and it is rare that a whale-watching tour does not find some of them. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/08/whale-watching.html

View West

This was taken with a lens at 200mm from the top of Mount Si by my wife and looks west with Lake Washington, Seattle, Puget Sound and the Olympics in the distance. The pictures we took of Seattle from Mount Si tended to be very blue and hazy and this was the best of them. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/05/mount-si.html
