This was the Golden Canyon trail in Death Valley National Park. The peak is Manly Beacon and the trail we hiked up through Golden Canyon and back down through Gower Gulch is visible below the Beacon. There are some people on the trail and they add some scale to the scene. It was a very warm day and the trail was quite steep though not long.

Our first day in Death Valley National Park we hiked the Golden Canyon-Gower Gulch loop, not a long hike but steep in parts and it was a very warm day. The two people are my daughter and wife and the photo was taken towards the top of the trail where it opens up below Zabriskie Point.

I am posting two photos of Death Valley because we are headed there very early Monday morning. We'll go first to the Moab area of Utah and visit some of the parks there, Goblin Valley, Blue Valley, Arches and Canyonlands, and then go on to pick up our oldest daughter in Las Vegas and from there to Death Valley where we'll spend a week.
The photo is from a loop hike up through Golden Canyon and back through Gower Gulch and shows the end of the trail as we exited Gower Gulch back into the valley. The Sierra Nevada is in the background across the valley. The hike is spectacular and goes to Zabriskie Point in the mountains on the east, if a side trail is followed from the top of the loop.

This is the last photo from Golden Canyon in Death Valley National Park and from our hike there. I had to show some more of the wonderful colors that give the canyon its name along with some of the amazing formations in the canyon.

The reddish formation in the background is known as Red Cathedral and that was our destination on this hike through Golden Canyon. It was warm enough when we were there around the beginning of March but it must be torture to hike there in the heat of summer.

This is Golden Canyon where we hiked the first afternoon of our two and half days in Death Valley National Park. A fabulous place almost entirely without vegetation, it must be almost unendurable in the summer heat. Certainly its volcanic origin is evident and it appears with its lack of vegetation to have only just come from the mouth of a volcano.
