Here again I did not take the time to key this out, but believe it to be the Magenta Paintbrush, Castilleja parviflora. It was photographed in the meadows at Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park.

Photographed on the Lillian Ridge Trail. This trail runs from the end of the Obstruction Point Road, a long gravel road that runs southeast from Hurricane Ridge into some of the most beautiful areas of the Olympics.

We found a few of these still in good shape in a sheltered area near Low Pass on our recent hike to the Pleiades Overlook. There are not a lot of wildflowers still blooming in the mountains and these usually bloom earlier. They are not common and finding them is always delightful.
The trail to the Pleiades Overlook is in the Twin Lakes area of the Mount Baker Wilderness not far from the Canadian border. The hike is known for its spectacular views of the North Cascades and of Mount Baker and one can even get glimpses of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia in some places.

Small-flowered Paintbrush

Mark Egger has identified this as the Small-flowered or Magenta Paintbrush, Castilleja parviflora var. oreopola, a variety found only in the area of Mount Rainier. We were intrigued by the deep reddish-purple color of the bracts, a color we had not seen before. Photographed along a forest service road in the Greenwater area north of Mount Rainier.

We didn't find it out on the Prairie but on a rocky coastline, in Washington Park on Fidalgo Island. Its botanical name is Lithophragma parviflora.
