Clear Lake

We live in an area that is dotted with lakes, some large, some small, and have access to a long, narrow and deep lake called Clear Lake. This photo looks south over the lake, though the lake is much longer than appears in the photo.

The Palouse is an area of hills and farmland in southeastern Washington, western Idaho and northeastern Oregon. It is primarily used for growing wheat and this is what the wheat country looks like in winter.
An Endless Skyway

This was taken in eastern Washington on the Columbia Plateau, a vast area of irrigated farms, endless vistas and huge skies - difficult to capture in pictures, but always beautiful. The title comes from the Woody Guthrie Song, "This Land is Your Land."
"As I was walking a ribbon of highway.
I saw above me an endless skyway.
I saw below me a golden valley.
This land was made for you and me."
The Last Cowboy

Taken in the town of Creston, a near ghost-town in eastern Washington. The building appears to have been a restaurant at one time but has long been abandoned, like nearly everything else in the town. We were on our way home from Spokane following Highway 2 when we stopped here.
Yellow Bells

A few of these were growing in the same field as the Grass Widows in the next post. We had photographed them the day before in the Ancient Lakes area of eastern Washington. Those had very little or none of the red color that these flowers had. They are Fritillaria pudica, Yellow Bells.

Ancient Lakes

We hiked today in the Columbia River Basin in the area of Ancient Lakes. We hiked two coulees, and visited not only the three lakes known as Ancient Lakes, but another named Dusty Lake where this photo was taken. The area is very dry and is sagebrush country, but we had a good day which, though sunny, was not unbearably hot. We saw some unusual wildflowers though it is still early in the season, the geology of the area is fantastic, and we even visited several waterfalls. I haven't had a chance to review my photos but this looked good enough to post and even though we are still on the road I wanted to get a picture posted.

Scablands
05 Apr 2013 |
|
For reasons unknown to me the area we hiked is known as the Scablands and the photo shows some of the geology of the area. The mesas which separate the coulees from one another are full of these columns which I assume are basalt and of volcanic origin.
This picture was taken as we hiked up from Dusty Lake across the mesa to Ancient Lakes. We had to scramble up the loose rock in the foreground and across the sloped area at the base of the columnar formations and through the notch in the distance.

Grass Widows

I intend to up load more pictures from our recent hike in the Ancient Lakes area of eastern Washington, but thought I'd upload two pictures today that were taken elsewhere in eastern Washington.
This is an early-season wildflower, Olsynium douglasii, or Grass Widows, photographed in the Medical Lake area of eastern Washington near Spokane. We found a whole field of them while out for a drive.
We not only found the ordinary lavender or pink form but a a few plants with white flowers and one plant with bi-colored flowers, both of which I'll post later when I have more time (was at an orchid show most of the day).
