We visited Multnomah Falls briefly while on a recent trip to the Columbia River gorge. The falls are on the Oregon side of the gorge east of Portland and are listed as the second tallest falls in the United States at 620 feet (189 m). They are along Old Highway 30 and are a popular tourist destination. The bridge over the falls was built in 1914 and is named after the man who financed it, George Benson.

Multnomah Falls is on the Oregon side of the Columbia River gorge about an hour's drive east of Portland. It is accessible from Old Highway 30, the scenic highway that runs east from Troutdale and from which many other waterfalls are visible and accessible, though Multnomah is the tallest and best known.
The upper falls drop 542 feet (189 m) and the lower falls another 69 feet (21 m). The falls is the tallest in Oregon and the second tallest in the USA, exceeded only by Yosemite Falls in the national park of that name.
The falls can be viewed from the visitor's center near the base of the falls, but there is also a footpath which leads up and across a bridge to the bottom of the upper falls. The bridge is visible in the picture.
This picture was taken on our recent trip to Portland and fairly early in the day. We had been at the falls the evening before, but the setting sun made pictures of the falls quite difficult.

There are around seventy-five waterfalls in the area west of Portland along the Oregon side of the Columbia River gorge, but Multnomah Falls is the tallest and best known. At the falls it is possible to walk to this bridge above the lower falls and then up to the top of the gorge as well.
This picture was taken in the evening just before the sunset while the second picture was taken the next morning when the light was more amenable to photography. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/06/columbia-ri... .
Lower Multnomah Falls

I was in the Portland, Oregon, area recently and had a few hours to spare. I used that time to visit some of the falls along Old Highway 30 east of Portland. It was late in the day and the light was not very good, but I enjoyed the visit. This area of the gorge is one of our favorite places.
This photo was taken from the walkway up to the bridge that spans the Lower Falls. The mist from the falls was blowing my way and I could not keep the lens clean and finally just gave up and took a few shots through the misted lens with this result which I thought worth posting.
Multonomah Falls is the most spectacular of some seventy waterfalls in the area. The upper falls (not visible here) drop 542 feet (189 m) and the lower falls another 69 feet (21 m). They are the tallest in Oregon and the second tallest in the USA, exceeded only by Yosemite Falls in the national park of that name.

I posted a picture of the lower falls yesterday. Here are both the Upper and Lower Falls in all their glory. Multnomah is the second tallest falls in the United States at a combined height of 611 feet (210 meters).

The Upper Falls at Multnomah drop 542 feet (189 m) from the top of the Columbia Gorge and are the most spectacular of the many waterfalls in that area.
