Photographed at the Barron Falls overlook, the dragonfly has been identified by my friend, Fizgig, as a female Scarlet Percher. The male of this species is red but the female is this yellowish color, a great example of sexual dimorphism.

These falls are on Surprise Creek at the lower end of the Barron Gorge. There was not much water coming over the falls, nor was there much else to see when we drove up here on the first day of our Australia trip.

The first day we were in Australia we arrived in Cairns about noon and after picking up a car and checking in at our youth hostel we did some exploring. We visited the lower end of Barron Gorge but didn't find much place to hike or much to see. Nor was there much water coming through the gorge, though we don't know whether it was just the dry season or whether the water was being diverted to run the power plant. In any case, this is the view up the gorge from the end of the road. Later we would visit the other end of the Barron Gorge while in the Atherton Tablelands and would find it much more scenic.

Barron Gorge is northwest of Cairns in Queensland, Australia. We arrived yesterday, June 8th, in Cairns and spent the afternoon and early evening exploring. This was one of the places we explored, though we were a bit disappointed by the lack of hiking. Today, June 9th, however, we were at the upper end of Barron Gorge and did some hiking there. Had a very good day there and at Dinden National Park, where we saw our first kangaroo, a big event for us though I'm sure a meaningless thing for most Australians.
