When we sailed out to the Great Barrier Reef for some snorkeling at Low Island, I took this photo of these shrimp trawlers at anchor near Low Island. Apparently they work at night and the crews rest during the day, very clearly the case here since there was no activity at all on the trawlers.

Low Island is part of the inner Barrier Reef and is the island from which we snorkeled a little of the reef. The photo was taken from the catamaran on which we sailed to the reef.

On our last day in Port Douglas and before traveling to Brisbane we went snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef. We took a catamaran cruise out of Port Douglas to Low Island and snorkeled off the island. I rented a small underwater camera and though it was difficult to operate and did not keep its charge long (lesson learned: don't rent the cameras they have on the boat), we did manage to get some decent photos of the coral and the fish. I have not identified either fish or coral, but the snorkeling was one of the high points of the trip. Low Island is part of the inner reef and has not been seriously affected by the bleaching that is destroying much of the outer reef.

On Friday, June 17th, we took a boat out to the inner islands of the Great Barrier Reef and went snorkeling off this island, Low Island. We had decent weather and the snorkeling was amazing.
