We leave for home tomorrow morning after two weeks of travelling, the last week spent in Death Valley National Park. We have 16 hours of driving ahead of us, but had a wonderful time - good weather, good company and stunning scenery. We hiked about a total of about 25 miles and spent two days exploring the backcountry in a 4WD Jeep. The photo was taken this afternoon on our last excursion and is of a volcanic crater about 2000 years old.

This is Crater Lake in Oregon with Wizard Island on the right. Crater Lake is an old volcanic cone that has filled with water over the millennia and Wizard Island is a newer volcanic cone that has pushed up from the bottom of the crater. The photo was taken from the West Rim Drive. The East Rim Drive was not yet open at the time due to snow.

This is the newer volcanic cone of Wizard Island in Crater Lake in Oregon. The cone can be visited by boat in the summer months, but none of the park services were open yet when we were there and the West Rim Drive had just been cleared of snow.

Here is Wizard Island in Crater Lake, Oregon, from the south rim of the crater. We had hoped to drive the whole rim of the crater but discovered that the East Rim Drive was still snowed in.

We saw this unnamed falls when hiking to Crater Lake (not the Crater Lake in Oregon). We found the falls, however, only because we had lost the trail (we later found it again), and we lost the trail because there was hardly any trail. Several years ago I tried to find Crater Lake on a foggy and very wet day and got lost. At that point the trail was marked with soggy bits of toilet paper many of which had disintegrated in the rain. This time the trail, such as it was, was marked with pieces of pink and orange ribbon, but we could not always find them. We did get to the lake eventually, however, with the help of my GPS, and didn't even mind getting lost, since otherwise we would have missed these falls and the beautiful rocky glen into which they fell. The creek, if I am not mistaken, is Money Creek, and is the outlet for Crater Lake.

On our recent trip down the Oregon coast to the California redwoods and back, we stopped at Crater Lake in central Oregon, arriving there at sunset one evening and leaving before noon the next day. Before leaving we drove nearly all the way around the crater.
Crater Lake is a National Park that features an old volcanic crater now filled with water. The old volcanic cone, now gone, is known as Mount Mazama, and the crater, with its cinder island, Wizard Island, is six miles across and the lake nearly 2000 feet deep.
It was snow melt time in the park, which is at around 7000 feet in elevation, and the mosquitoes were ferocious. We could hardly get out of the car for pictures and when we did had to spend some time killing the insects that made it into the car during our hasty exits and returns.
There is a drive that follows the rim nearly all the way around the crater and we drove most of it before leaving for home. We would like to go back some time when the mosquitoes are not so bad and see the park again and even do some hiking there.

This was taken along the West Rim Drive in Crater Lake National Park, Oregon., when we were there earlier this summer on our way home from the Oregon Coast and northern California.

Taken earlier this summer on a trip down the Oregon coast into northern California and back by way of the Siskiyou Mountains and Crater Lake. This was taken the evening we arrived at Crater Lake. The mosquitoes were ferocious and we stopped for only a few pictures hoping they would be better the next day. They were not. The picture was taken from the south rim near the visitor's center and has Wizard Island in the background.
