Devil's Golf Course must be a modern name since I am certain the early settlers were not thinking about playing golf when they traveled through Death Valley and I am sure they did not have their golf clubs with them either. The area is well named, however, since its salt deposits are so rough they will tear your shoes to pieces very quickly, the opposite of a nice smooth fairway or putting green. The photo was taken by my wife and one of the insets shows the salt deposits close up.

These are the salt flats at Devil's Golf Course, not far from the lowest point in Death Valley, Badwater, at 282 feet (86 meters) below sea level and the highest point in the National Park, Telescope Peak, at 11,049 feet (3368 meters) above sea level.

I do not know if these white deposits are the origin of the lake's name, but the other lakes had these same deposits on the rock around them. Someone has suggested it is calcium from the hard water, but I could find no information about them. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/ancient-lak...
