Large-awned Sedge

This, I believe, i the Large-awned Sedge, Carex macrochaeta, listed here in Washington as sensitive and found only in Oregon and Washington in the United States. This example was photographed near Bonaparte Lake in eastern Washington. Sedges in the genus Carex have male flowers at the top of the flowering stem and female flowers below.

Our ferry was delayed eight hours in Juneau due to mechanical problems and we used the time to do some hiking. We hiked the Auke Nu trail and part of the Spaulding trail north of the city. The hikes were not the most inspiring hikes we've been on but it was far better than sitting on the ferry all those hours. These sedges were photographed along the Spaulding trail.
