This is another of the many species, varieties and colors of Indian Painbrush we saw in the Colorado Rockies when hiking there last summer. I believe it is Castilleja versicolor, the Varied Paintbrush.

Turkey-tail Fungus

This was photographed on our most recent hike along Baker Lake in the North Cascades. The photo was taken looking straight down at the fungus, not an angle I often use in the field, but in this case it shows the concentric bands of color that characterize this fungus. Nor is the color enhanced, though this is an especially colorful and good example of the species.

Photographed in Washington Park on the same day we found the white Fairy Slipper. I enjoy the colors and forms of the different fungi that are so common in the forests here. This is almost certainly the Turkey Tail Shelf Fungus, Trametes versicolor.
