Returning from our hike up to Herman Saddle we followed the Chain Lakes trail around the west side of Lower Bagley Lake with (from the left) Winchester Mountain and Mount Larrabee in the distance.

This was a hike with brother Tim in the area of Winchester Mountain - we were on the shoulder of Winchester looking east when the photo was taken. Not a great day but we were able to get some very good pictures.

This was taken on a hike with Tim at Winchester Mountain in the North Cascades near the Canadian border. The day was mostly cloudy and wet with occasional sunshine and we were on the trail on the shoulder of Winchester Mountain looking ahead toward High Pass (above the photo at the top of the slope) with the Silesia Creek valley to the right.

The peaks in the background at from right to left, Mount Larrabee, Winchester Mountain and (behind the trees), American and Canadian Border Peaks. This is looking north from the snowshoe trail to artist's Point.

Taken from Winchester Mountain, the photo shows the Border Peaks, American Border Peak in front and partially obscured by clouds, and Canadian Border Peak behind. As the names suggest the border between the two countries runs between the peaks.

This was taken from the Winchester Mountain trail and looks to the southeast. Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan (they weren't visible) would be just around the corner of the outcrop.

This is the Winchester Mountain trail as it winds around the south side of the peak. The inset shows the same area in autumn when the blueberries have changed color.

If the weather is clear there are spectacular views of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan from the Winchester Mountain trail, but this is all we saw on our last hike there. The weather was not the greatest though it didn't rain, but we were disappointed by low hanging clouds.

This is me taking the previous shot along the Winchester Mountain trail. The photo, rather obviously, was taken by someone else, in this case, my wife, who is forever taking pictures of me while we are hiking, which is rather complimentary, except that I hate being photographed. I thought, though, that this was worth posting, since it shows me as you usually see me with a camera for a face.

This is taken near the end of the Winchester Mountain trail before the final ascent and as one winds around from the south to the north side of the peak.

Taken at the top of Winchester Mountain, this is a panoramic view that includes all the peaks I've previously posted, Tomyhoi Peak on the far left with the Tomyhoi Lake below, then a Canadian peak whose name I do not know, the Canadian Border Peak and American Border Peak with Mount Larrabee on the far right and High Pass below it.

Photographed along the Winchester Mountain trail, I believe this is the Rock Penstemon, Penstemon rupicola.

Also known as Potentilla fruticosa, this plant grows in the alpine or subalpine zones around the world and is also a common garden plant. This example from the wild was photographed near the treeline on Winchester Mountain.
Spreading Phlox and Mountains

Didn't quite get the composition on this but thought it was worth posting anyway. The photo was taken on the Winchester Mountain trail and looks back toward Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan, but neither were visible that day. The day started fairly nice, but soon clouded over and threatened rain. The flowers in the foreground are the Spreading Phlox, Phlox diffusa.

This looks northwest from Winchester Mountain near the end of the trail, but still towards the Canadian border. The peaks in the distance are part of the Canadian Coastal Range, well into Canada.

Photographed on Winchester Mountain, this is one of our native trees and is found at higher altitudes up to the treeline. It is often stunted and prostrate at higher elevations, but its magnificent cones are always attractive. Its botanical name is Abies lasiocarpa.
The Border Peaks

This was taken on a hike with friends late last summer at Winchester Mountain. Winchester Mountain is one of our favorite hikes in the North Cascades and is near the American and Canadian border. These two peaks, visible from the top of Winchester Mountain actually straddle the border. The peak in the foreground is American Border Peak and the peak in the back is Canadian Border Peak.
