Barkeria Anita

This is Barkeria shoemakeri crossed with Barkeria naevosa. I no longer grow these. I have neither the room nor climate for them. This is an old scanned slide from our years in Houston where they grew like weeds.

Catasetum Fanfair

RHH
25 Sep 2009 1 290
In Explore September 25, 2009, #405. This is a hybrid of Catasetum expansum and saccatum and a nice example of this interesting group of orchids. The appendages above the lip of this flower are part of the pollinating mechanism. They are like triggers that when touched cause the pollinia to shoot out. These pollinia are attached to a short stalk with a pad of quick drying adhesive on the end. The pollinia, when shot out of the flower, glue themselves to the back of the pollinating insect or to the nose of the person who is trying to smell the flower (the flowers have a very attractive scent).

Cycnoches Cygnet

In Explore November 12, 2009, #309. Cycnoches is sometimes called the swan orchid because the lip and column when viewed up side down resemble the body and neck of a swan. This particular flower is a hybrid of Cycnoches chlorochilon and Cycnoches haagii.

Restrepia elegans x dodsonii

RHH
14 Dec 2009 4 5 485
Restrepia is a genus of small orchids that are all brightly colored and that all look similar to this. It is difficult to imagine that someone went through the trouble of trying to hybridize these tiny flowers, but someone has and this is the result. The hybrid has not, however, been registered.
