Photographed at one of our feeders, this is a male Evening Grosbeak, a large Finch. We see them only occasionally and this one was at the suet before looking for seed.

This Black-headed Grosbeak was a visitor to our feeders in late spring and early summer, perhaps while migrating. We have not seen them yet this year but hope too as they are some of the most beautiful birds we have in the area. Some consider it con-specific with the Rose-breasted Grosbeak of the Eastern States due to the fact that they interbreed where their ranges overlap.

Because of its color I had identified this as an oriole, an immature Bullock's Oriole, when it first appeared at our feeders, but have since realized it is not an oriole at all but a Black-headed Grosbeak, and so, since this is a first for me, I thought I'd post it even though the photo is not quite as good as I would like.
