Madison Falls

This is my wife's photo of the lower end of Madison Falls. My photo of the whole falls is below. The falls is a very short hike in from the entrance station to the Elwha Valley area of Olympic National Park. When we were there the combination of sunlight and deep shadow made photography very difficult and both of these photos were manipulated in PSE to reduce the shadows.

The Elwha River is in the north part of Olympic National Park and empties into the Straits of San Juan de Fuca. In what must be an historic occasion, the National Park Service is removing two dams on the river, so that for the first time in 100 years the river will flow unimpeded from its headwaters to the Straits. Dam removal is nearly finished and should be completed by the end of next year. This photo shows the river below the dams near the entrance to this part of the park.

This is Madison Falls near the entrance to the Elwha Valley in Olympic National Park. It drops at this point about 40 feet into Madison Creek which empties into the Elwha River. It was a real challenge to photograph when we were there last summer since the sun was high and the falls were in a narrow little gorge where the shadows were heavy. This was the best I could do.
