On June 13th we visited a Sugar Cane and Cocoa plantation near Miallo. I posted a photo of the Cocoa flowers a couple of days ago (see inset photo). This is a Cocoa pod which will be ready for harvesting when it it turns color. After harvesting, the seeds, which are embedded in a white pulp, are removed and they are the source of that wonderful stuff we know as Cocoa. Interestingly, the scientific name, Theobroma, means "food of the gods".

These are the flowers of the Cocoa tree. They and the pods which develop from them grow right on the trunk and branches of the tree. They were photographed at a sugar cane and cocoa plantation near Miallo that we toured while staying in Port Douglas.
