Golden Currant or Spicebush is a shrub native to this area. It is flowering now and will soon be producing its beautiful golden-orange fruit. We were hiking yesterday at Hog Lake and saw it there but hope to grow some in our garden from cuttings. The birds like the fruit, however, and it is usually hard to find any when they are ripe.

This unusual orchid is from Ecuador and Colombia and is named for its fancied resemblance to the fruits of the Ribes family. It is a tiny plant only a few inches tall with even smaller flowers.

Also used as a garden plant, this beautiful shrub is native to the Pacific Northwest. We found these growing in the woods at Sharpe Park, but had trouble photographing them in the wind that was blowing. Red-flowering Currant is Ribes sanguineum.
