When we were in Michigan in April and May we saw Trout Lilies, Erythronium americanum, in bud or blooming nearly everywhere we went. I had not seen them in years, not since we lived in the eastern USA, so it was a delight to become reacquainted. We have a number of species of Erythronium here in Washington but not this one. One of the insets was taken in the ditch near our son's home and the other two in a Grand Rapids city park. This photo was taken in Rosy Mound Natural Area near Lake Michigan. The plant is named for its speckled leaves but in this photo the foliage in the background is of another plant, a Dicentra.

These Trout Lilies were photographed at a Grand Rapids city park named The Ravines. It is along the Grand River and is a great natural area. The photo shows the beautifully patterned leaves for which the plant is named.

This Trout Lily was photographed in the ditch near our son's home in Michigan. It was the first Trout Lily I had seen in many years. We make frequent trips to Michigan but seldom in the spring and we found these not only on his property but in several of the parks we visited.
