This is the seed head of the Western Pasqueflower, Anemone occidentalis, a very common sight in the mountains in autumn. Known for obvious reasons as the Old Man of the Mountains, this one is already losing its seeds. It was photographed along the Galena-Chain Lakes trail in the North Cascades near Mount Baker.

This is the seedhead of the Western Pasque Flower or Old Man of the Mountains, Anemone occidentalis, photographed near Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park. The flowers, which bloom in the spring as the snow melts, are shown below.

The Western Pasque Flower, Anemone occidentalis, is a common wildflower at higher elevations in the Rockies and the Cascades, blooming early and just as the snow melts. These were photographed by my wife in Mount Robson Provincial Park while backpacking there and show why I always take her along and why when we get home I make sure I go through her pictures and get all the best ones. Somehow or other she always manages to outdo me and get several of the best photos of any trip we make.
