At Lower Cathedral Lake in Yosemite National Park, this Raven stayed close to us, hoping for a handout, especially when we were having our lunch. If we moved away from our backpack he was right there hoping to get into it. We didn't give him anything, since that is against the rules in the national parks but we took his photo.

Camped overnight in Culp Valley in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, we watched the sunrise in the morning before departing.

We were in the parking area at Fountain Paint Pots, a geyser basin in Yellowstone National Park, when this Raven landed on top of our car. Instantly we were surrounded by excited oriental tourists with cameras who seemed more interested in the Raven than in the geysers. I managed to get a photo as well before heading off to see the geysers. We are in Rapid City, South Dakota, where we spent the night, and are planning to head off to Badlands National Park in a while, but are in no hurry since the weather has turned cloudy and gray with some rain. We don't plan to be in northwest Iowa until this evening so have plenty of time to waste and are on the Internet for a while before heading on.

We saw Ravens at several stops in Kootenay and Banff National Parks as we traveled through them and through British Columbia and Alberta. This Raven, one of a pair, was photographed in Banff. We thought first they were begging but it soon became evident that the male at least was more interested in something other than food as the insets show. Courting in the snow is not something I would care to do, but I'm not a Raven.

These Ravens, photographed in Banff National Park in Alberta, were courting in the snow, not something I would care to do, but, then, I'm not a Raven.

We thought at first that this male Raven (I think it's the male) was trying to keep warm, but it soon was evident that he was courting and that keeping warm was not a factor in his actions. Whether his display was successful we did not stay to find out.

Photographed in Denali National Park near Polychrome Pass, this bird was raising a brood of young under a bridge and so was there for photos when the bus went by.
