This orchid is vvery rare in Washington but very common in the Canadian Rockies. It is known as the Frog Orchid for its long lip which looks like the back legs of a jumping frog, if you have some imagination. It's boatanical name is Dactylorhiza viridis.

This terrestrial orchid is reputed to grow in Washington but we have not found it, not yet anyway. It was photographed by my wife along the Harding Icefields trail in Kenai Fjords National Park . Its botanical name is Dactylorhiza viride var. virescens (it is also sometimes found under the name Coeloglossum viride) and it is known as the Frog Orchid because its lip looks like the back legs of a jumping frog. It is very common across Canada and is also found across the north and east of the United States, though it is usually rarer the further south one goes.

Also known as the Long-bracted Green Orchis, this is Coeloglossum viride var. virescens, a native orchid very rare in Washington and very common in British Columbia and Alberta. This example was photographed along the Grassi Lakes trail above Canmore, Alberta.

Also known as the Long-bracted Green Orchis, Coeloglossum viride var. virescens is found around the world in northern regions. This example was photographed along the Maligne Lake Road in Jasper National Park where it is very common. It is listed for our state, the state of Washington, but there is no one who seems to know where it might be found.
