Black Sand - Sunset Lake

This is some of the runoff from the geysers and hot springs in Black Sand Basin in Yellowstone National Park. Black Sand Basin is across the road from Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin. The colors of the of the water are the result of cyanobacteria living in the water.

Sunset Lake is one of the hot springs in Yellowstone National Park and in Black Sand Geyser Basin there. The temperature of the water determines the kind and color of the cyanobacteria which color these hot springs.

Rainbow Pool is in Black Sand Geyser Basin on the southeast side of Yellowstone National Park. It is typical of many hot springs in Yellowstone with its beautiful colors caused by cyanobacteria, algae, fungi, protozoa and mosses living at different water temperatures.

This is the Firehole River as it winds through Black Sand Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park. The white is not snow but calcium carbonate deposits from the hot springs and geysers in the area and the colored areas in the background are where hot water is flowing and algae growing in the hot water.

Cliff Geyser is in Black Sand Basin in Yellowstone National Park, across the main Road from Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin. I suppose the name refers to the fact that it is just above the Firehole River which winds through the geyser basin.

Black Sand Basin is one of the geyser basins on the southwest side of Yellowstone National Park, across the main road from the Upper Geyser Basin and Old Faithful. These photos show the Firehole River as it winds through the geyser basin collecting hot water from the geysers and hot springs there.
