This, which I believe to be Sitka Sedge, was photographed along the Harding Icefields trail in the Exit Glacier section of Kenai Fjords National Park.

These photos of new growth on conifers were taken at Yaquina Head Natural Area in Oregon. I believe these are Sitka Spruce, a tree that in favored locations grows to be over 170 feet tall (52 m) but along the coast is often little more than a gnarled shrub.
Sitka Mountain Ash

The Sitka Mountain Ash were just changing color, both leaves and berries, the leaves to an orange-yellow and the berries from green to red, when we hiked the Railroad Grade trail on the south side of Mount Baker. They are one of the highlights of autumn in the North Cascades.

Sitka Mountain Ash, a small tree or shrub, provides much of the autumn color in the Cascades. This examle was photographed along the Chain Lakes trail near Iceberg Lake.

Hiking in the mountains in autumn is colorful but the color is provided not by trees but by shrubs and ground cover, blueberries, sedges, vine maples and this plant, the Sitka Mountain Ash. This example was photographed along the Galena-Chain Lakes trail near Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan in the North Cascades.

Taken while hiking with Tim last August on a rainy day. We hiked a good part of the Lake Ann trail near Mount Baker and found plenty of subjects to photograph in spite of the rain and bad weather.
A Wet Day

Tim and I were hiking the Lake Ann trail on a very wet day when this was taken. We saw nothing of the mountains around us that day and almost turned back at the trailhead, but found the hike interesting and worthwhile in spite of the wet day. These, I believe, are the berries of Sitka Mountain Ash after they've been touched by frost and have startted to fall.
Mountain Heliotrope

|
Photographed near the end of the Heliotrope Ridge trail, these are the seedheads of Sitka Valerian or Mountain Heliotrope, the plant for which Heliotrope Ridge is named. As the name indicates it is not really Heliotrope but Valerian. The hike to Heliotrope Ridge was one I did recently with my brother Tim.
Wildflowers

Taken along the trail as we climbed from the Swift Creek basin up to Lake Ann. The photo looks back down the valley through which we hiked. The flowers are Mountain Heliotrope, Valeriana sitchensis and Arctic Lupine, Lupinus latifolius.
Sitka Mistmaiden

This is a rare alpine wildflower that we photographed at Lake Serene. Its botanical name is Romanzoffia sitchensis, but its common name is much more charming. This year everything was very early and by the end of July there were few wildflowers still blooming, but at these higher elevations where the snow had just melted we found plenty of wildflowers including this little gem.
