While on the southeast end of Big Bend National Park we visited the hot springs area, though the springs themselves looked rather unappetizing to us. Hiking to the springs we found this lone Monarch butterfly, likely an early migrant from Mexico.

The Monarch Butterfly is one of the more common butterflies in its range and where the plants it prefers are found. We never see it in eastern Washington but saw these Monarchs in western Michigan in the Bass River Recreation Area.

In Michigan recently we had the opportunity to hike twice along the Grand River in the Bass River Recreation area. There, for the first time in many years, we saw Monarch Butterflies and were able to get some photos as well.

We do not see Monarch Butterflies where we live, so it was wonderful to see them again when we were in Michigan recently. We spent most of our time there with family but did get hiking a couple times, twice to the Bass River Recreation area along the Grand River where this butterfly was photographed.

For Pam

Seeing Pam's beautiful butterfly photos always made me jealous, especially when she posted a photo of Monarch Butterfly, a butterfly we never see here in Washington. Her reply was always "I'll trade my butterfly for your mountains any day." May she with courage climb her mountain and continue to be an inspiration and encouragement to many others, as she has so often been to me.
