This is an early morning photo of the geysers and springs that are on the hillside below the museum at Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone. They are from left to right Black Growler, Guardian Geyser and Dark Cavern Geyser if I am not mistaken.

I've mentioned in a previous post that the main road in Yellowstone is in the rough shape of a figure "8" with two loops. We've been following the upper or northernmost loop counterclockwise in our tour of Yellowstone and have come to the bottom of the upper loop to Norris Junction where you continue south on the lower loop or head east on the bottom side of the upper loop.
At Norris Junction a short side road to the west takes you to Norris Geyser Basin, one of the most active and beautiful areas of Yellowstone. The geyser basin has two parts, Porcelain Basin to the north and the Back Basin to the south. These photos are all of Porcelain Basin reached by stairs from a small visitors' center and a boardwalk around and through the basin.
The first inset shows why this is called Porcelain Basin and is actually on old film photo taken in 1979 on the first trip my wife and I made to Yellowstone. I had been there as a child and she had never been there, so it was a great experience for both of us and we have been there many times since, together or with other family members, usually grandchildren.

One can see in the hot water running here the differently colored bacteria and algae that color the hot springs and thermal features of Yellowstone National Park. Here the greens and yellows indicate that this water has cooled though it is still quite warm. The photo was taken in Porcelain Basin, part of the Norris Geyser Basin.

Porcelain Basin is part of the Norris Geyser Basin on the upper west side of Yellowstone National Park. Most of thermal activity in this area is in the form of hot springs and steam vents such as these. The Norris Basin geysers are on the other side of the hill and beyond the trees in the photo.

These are characteristic of what can be found all over Yellowstone National Park - hot water seeping up through the ground and the seeps colored by thermophilic algae. The area covered in this photo is only a few feet across and the photo was taken from one of the boardwalks in Porcelain Basin.

This is not smoke or the result of a fire, but steam from one of the vents in Porcelain Basin at Yellowstone National Park. Early in the morning, especially on a cold morning, the steam from the geysers and hot springs can be so heavy that it is almost impossible to see anything.

Porcelain Basin is a part of the Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park. It is noted especially for its hot springs, steam vents and pools. It is on the west side of the park just north of the place where the two loops that the main road makes through park come together. It is one of the most active areas in the park and is also one of the most beautiful, though I say that hesitantly, since there isn't any part of the park that isn't beautiful. The photo below is very old, an old film photo taken in 1979 on one of our first visits to the park, but shows the reason for the name, Porcelain Basin.

The photo was taken in Norris Geyser Basin and shows vents where steam and hot water escape from the pressurized "plumbing" system below. These are just one of many thermal features in Yellowstone National Park.
