As you travel from the Madison Junction to Norris Junction in Yellowstone National Park, you are traveling clockwise along the northwest quadrant of the lower loop of Yellowstone's main road. This area does not have as many features as other areas of the park, but Gibbon Falls is there and is a major attraction. These are the falls from the viewing area which extends along the road for quite a ways and allows different views of the falls.

After spending several hours at Mammoth Hot Springs on the north end of Yellowstone National Park we headed south toward Madison Junction, following the Gibbon River and stopping at Beryl Spring (see insets) and Gibbon Falls along the way (see insets). We intended to stop at Norris Geyser Basin but the cars were waiting in line for parking, another indication to us of how busy the park was.

Gibbon Falls on the Gibbon River is along the road from Norris Junction to Mammoth Hot Springs. There is a turn-off along the road from which the falls can be viewed and this photo was taken there.

Gibbon Falls is on the west side of the upper loop in Yellowstone National Park (the main road in Yellowstone is a huge figure eight). The falls are on the Gibbon River and drop 84 feet. They are named for Colonel John Gibbon who was part of the 1872 Geological Survey of Yellowstone. They are one of many spectacular waterfalls in the park.
