Orange Spring Mound is along the Upper Terraces Drive at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park. It's color is due to orange-tinted cyanobacteria which grow in the water that trickles from the mound. The inset photos are of White Elephant Terrace, just a little ways from Orange Spring, and of some Juniper berries growing nearby.

Orange Spring Mound is along the Upper Terraces Drive in Yellowstone National Park. I do not remember ever seeing it inactive all the times we've been in Yellowstone. The Upper Terraces are part of the Mammoth Hot Springs area at the north end of the park, an area whose thermal activity is always changing.

Orange Spring Mound is one of the prominent features of the upper terraces at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park and beautifully illustrates one of the prominent features of Yellowstone. The mound was formed of deposits left by hot water as it seeped up through the underlying limestone and dissolved some of it, cooling when it reached the surface. The back of the mound is white and not active at present. The front of the mound is active and colored by algae that live in the hot water. The trees were killed by the hot water and its deposits. This goes on in various ways all over Yellowstone and the activity varies with areas constantly changing their activity. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/09/yellowstone-national-park.html
