Autumn Aspen

This is a phone photo taken last autumn in the Colorado Rockies and the Indian Peaks Wilderness. The road is the road to the Fourth of July trailhead where I hiked to Diamond Lakes with my cousin and his son. The hike is 9.5 miles in and out with 1200 feet of elevation gain and Upper Diamond Lake is at an altitude of 11,738 feet. I did not have a camera along, so the photos I took were with my phone. I apologize for their poor quality. The cousin with whom I hiked is an avid hiker who has climbed many of Colorado's 14,000 foot peaks. He used his phone to do a short video of our hike which is posted on Youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsqynrTIhPQ

I was in Colorado this past autumn and hiked in the Rockies with a cousin and his son. We did the Diamond Lake trail in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. I did not have a camera along but took a few photos with my phone including these panoramas. This is of the meadows near Diamond Lake, but we hiked beyond this to Upper Diamond Lake. The hike is 9.5 miles in and out with 1200 feet of elevation gain and Upper Diamond Lake is at an altitude of 11,738 feet.. The cousin with whom I hiked is an avid hiker who has climbed many of Colorado's 14,000 foot peaks. Last autumn I was in Colorado and hiked with a cousin and his son in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. We hiked the Diamond Lake trail to Upper Diamond Lake, just visible in this photo. The peak behind is Mount Jasper. The hike was about nine miles in and out with over a thousand feet of elevation gain.

North Cascades Autumn Color

This was taken on a recent hike in the Twin Lakes area of the North Cascades north of Mount Baker. We were hiking to the top of Winchester Mountain and looks down from the trail to the shoreline of the lower of the Twin Lakes and captures some of the amazing autumn color of the North Cascades as well. The color in this case is provided by wild blueberries which we also enjoyed (the bears enjoy them, too, but we did not see any bears on this hike). ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...

The autumn color, especially of the blueberries, is spectacular in the North Cascades. This photo was taken looking back down the Winchester Mountain trail and to the east early in the morning just after sunrise. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...

Twin Lakes

Thought I would post one of son Edward's pictures from our hike in the Twin Lakes area of Mount Baker Wilderness. This picture, taken from the trail to the top of Winchester Mountain, is certainly worthy of being posted and is one of the best photos from our hike. You can see in the picture our vehicle, our campsite between the two lakes and the road (gated) through Skagway Pass to the Lone Jack Mine, an active gold mine. We hiked down the road a ways one evening and found other evidences of mining activity in the area, including an old mine shaft. The photo also shows some of the autumn color in the mountains. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...

High Pass From Winchester Mountain

This was taken looking down and to the north from the top of Winchester Mountain (6,500 feet). We had hiked the trail over High Pass to Pleiades Overlook the previous day. That trail is visible at the bottom of the picture and leads across the ridge of High Pass and up the mountain on the farther side of the pass. We also hiked down to the old abandoned Gargett Mine, the trail to which is visible in the basin in the center of the picture just above the shadows. The old mineshaft on the south flank of Mount Larrabee is in the trees that are visible just above the knob at the bottom of the picture. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...

Moon over Winchester Mountain

The sun was already up, and we were well along on our hike to the top of Winchester Mountain, but the moon was late in setting and I managed to get this half-way decent picture over the ridge ahead of us. We had to go around this rocky outcrop and through a narrow saddle to reach the west side of the mountain where the trail continued. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...

Winchester Mountain Trail

Taken from the trail not far from the top where the trail, having followed along the south side of Winchester Mountain, crosses a saddle and heads up the west side of the peak. The trailhead with cars parked there is visible near the lake. Our camp is also just visible above the reflections of the trees. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...

This was a part of our trail up Winchester Mountain and will likely be the last of the pictures I post from that hike. Thanks for looking, commenting and for being patient with so many pictures from one place. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...

Fire Lookout

This is the old fire lookout at the top of Winchester Mountain. It is now maintained as a place for hikers to stay overnight and when we were there early in the morning there were several people occupying it. Mount Baker is in the background. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...
