We've been traveling the past week through the Canadian Rockies, camping, hiking and sightseeing. We've been through Kootenay, Banff and Jasper National Parks and Mount Robson Provincial Park and are now for a while in Edmonton visiting children and grandchildren. We saw a group of these Mountain Goats in Jasper two days ago and stopped for pictures.

One more photo from Canada and then on to other things. This is another view of the Maligne Canyon in Jasper National Park in Alberta. It shows how narrow this canyon can be.
Maligne River and Canyon

The Maligne River and its canyon are in Jasper National Park in Alberta. At one point the canyon is so narrow that the river cannot even be seen. This is one of the areas where the river is somewhat more accessible.
Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake is in the northeast part of Jasper National Park, Alberta. It is a popular tourist destination and if you look closely you can see a boat in the distance and a small red buoy towards the foreground. I haven't looked up the peaks in the distance but if I find time will do so and add a note.

Frog Orchid

Also known as the Long-bracted Green Orchis, not nearly as nice a name as Frog Orchid, this species is very common in the Canadian Rockies and this example was photographed in Jasper National Park. Its common name probably comes from the resemblance of the lip to the back legs of a jumping frog, but a bit of imagination is needed to see it It's botanical name is Coeloglossum viride var. virescens.

This is another of my wife's photos of the Bighorn lambs we saw in Jasper National Park last summer. The photo was taken on a rather quick trip through the park to Edmonton to see our children and grandchildren there.
Northern Small Yellow Lady's Slipper
29 Oct 2013 |
Some distinguish between two or more varieties of the Yellow Lady's Slipper. They are very difficult to tell apart, however, and I have never been sure I am seeing one or the other variety. If I am not mistaken, therefore, these are Cyprripedium parviflorum var. makasin, the Northern Small Yellow Lady's Slipper, with smaller and more intensely colored flowers than the other variety and with a more intense fragrance.

Yellow Lady's Slipper with Crab Spider
26 Oct 2013 |
We were photographing this clump of Yellow Lady's Slippers in Jasper when we noticed the Crab Spider hanging on to the bottom of the one of the pouches. These spiders are able over a period of time to change their color to match their surroundings, something this spider has managed to do successfully. These are almost certainly Cypripedium parviflorum var. makasin, a small-flowered form of the Yellow Lady's Slippers. These were very tiny flowers and very fragrant, both characteristics of variety makasin. Also, that this flower had one petal tucked into the pouch was not my doing, but we found it like that.

This was taken along the highway as traveled east through Jasper National Park and along the river where the highway follows the river for a ways.

Also known as the Long-bracted Green Orchis, Coeloglossum viride var. virescens is found around the world in northern regions. This example was photographed along the Maligne Lake Road in Jasper National Park where it is very common. It is listed for our state, the state of Washington, but there is no one who seems to know where it might be found.
Bull Elk

This Elk was photographed in Jasper National Park by my wife. I got quite a few photos as well but hers was better, so that's the one I posted. The American Elk is Cervus canadensis and this is a nice adult male, though his antlers are not yet that large.

This photo was taken by my wife and was one of the best photos from our trip up to Edmonton. I was able to get pictures of these young ones also, but hers was by far the best. The photo was taken in Jasper National Park.

We found these growing in the woods along the Maligne Lake Road in Jasper National Park. They are about a foot tall and grow on a slender stem that sways in the lightest breeze - a wonderful sight.
