These bison were photographed at Fountain Flats in Yellowstone National Park. Most of them were crossing the Yellowstone River and moving out of camera range, but these three were still on the other side of the road.

These are more of the bison we photographed at Fountain Flats in Yellowstone National Park. Most of them were moving across the Firehole River when we saw them and the light was wrong, but I like the photo anyway.

Photographed at Fountain Flats in Yellowstone National Park, this bull is wallowing in a dusty depression in the ground. There are different explanations of this behavior but it may be connected with the rut and the fact that bulls often urinate in the wallows before rolling in them.

This wallowing bison bull was photographed at Fountain Flats in Yellowstone National Park and is just getting up from the dust wallow in which he was rolling. This behavior has different explanations but is common and there are still old buffalo wallows on the plains where these animals once roamed.

We saw several bison bulls wallowing when we were in Yellowstone National Park. This bull is standing after rolling in the dust several times (see insets) and some of the dust is blowing away. There are different explanations for this practice, including protection from biting insects, showing prowess during the rut season, etc. These photos were taken where a herd of bison were crossing the Firehole River at Fountain Flats.
