Northern State Hospital

Opened in 1912 and designed by the well-known architect, Frederick Olmstead, Northern State Mental Hospital was originally a self-sufficient institution with a farm and cannery to support its operations. The hospital is in the shadow of the Cascades and was a very beautiful place. The hospital was closed in 1973 but many of the main buildings are still used for other purposes. The farm, however, has fallen into decay and is now part of a state recreation area and open to the public. We visited there last October and walked the area of the old farm. These are some of the barns that were part of the hospital's dairy.

If I remember, this was taken north of Quincy, Washington, but it really could have been taken almost anywhere in eastern Washington.

This is fairly typical scenery in central eastern Washington - open country, rolling hills, scattered farm buildings and houses and big skies.

Taken near Medical Lake, Washington, just west of Spokane, in an area that is largely given to farmland and scrub pine.

Typical drier, sparsely populated farmland of the east-central part of the state of Washington - very different from the rainy, forested and mountainous western part of the state.

This past Monday we took the day off and went first to Wallace Falls State Park where we hiked for part of the day. In the afternoon on our way home we stopped in the Skagit Valley to see the daffodils in bloom in the fields of the bulb growers. They were very near their peak and the weather was clearing as well. After driving around the area and getting what pictures we could, we stopped at the Outback for a light supper and arrived home tired but happy. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/04/skagit-vall...

In Explore May 1, 2012, #53. Another picture from our recent trip to the Skagit Valley to see the tulip fields in bloom. These are the fields of Roozengaarde's, one of the principal growers in that area and the picture looks east to the North Cascades. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/05/skagit-vall...

Dairy Barns and Stables

These are some of the barns at Northern State Hospital, dairy barns, I believe, and part of a complex of barns and buildings that also included stables and a poultry-raising operation. The barns are seen here from the fields below where many of the crops were raised and over a tangle of brambles and weeds. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/01/northern-st...

Dairy Barn

This is the interior of the barn shown in the photo, below - even worse from the inside than from the outside. It appears to have housed equipment and machinery for the dairy (in one of the rooms there is a large boiler). ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/01/northern-st...

Outbuilding

This is one of the farm's outbuildings at Northern State Hospital. It appears to have been used as a shelter for cattle or for hay and falling down and overrun with brambles. This photo also gives a sense of how large this area is. The main hospital grounds are beyond the trees at the far side of the open area beyond this building. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/01/northern-st...
