When the Golfinches change back to their bright yellow we know that spring has arrived. In the winter they wear a dull green, perhaps for protection but turn an ever brighter yellow than this by summer.

We have two Finches in our area that are very difficult to tell apart, the House Finch and the Purple Finch. This is the male House Finch, distinguished by the lack of a notch in the tail, a slightly curved upper mandible and with the red color confined mostly to head and breast (the female lacks the red coloration). We sometimes have a dozen of them at our feeders at the same time.

I believe this is a House Finch and not a Purple Finch. I find them very difficult to tell apart and they are both found in our area.
