Masdevallia veitchiana is sometimes called the "Queen of the Madsdevallias" and for good reason. Its large, spectacularly colored flowers are some of the best in the genus. The base color of its flowers is orange and the purple coloring is a dense covering of tiny glandular hairs. It is from Peru and is called there "Gallo-gallo" for its resemblance to a rooster's crest. This plant has been awarded by the American Orchid Society.

This too is not my plant but was photographed at our recent show. I've grown the species but it is a little large for my limited area, though very beautiful, in fact, the flower I use for my avatar is this species, grown, flowered and photographed by myself. It is from the Andes in Peru. It is also #26 in my 100x: 2014 project, so I am a quarter of the way finished with that.

Blue background instead of black (as below), stronger backlighting and a different exposure. Masdevallia veitchiana is from Peru.
