Upper and Middle Gaylor Lakes

As we hiked from Upper Gaylor Lake to the site of the old Sierra Silver Mine, this was the view back down the trail. The peak is Gaylor Peak and the ridge over which hiked to reach the lakes is just beyond the peak.

Taken as we hiked from Middle to Upper Gaylor Lake in Yosemite National Park - I believe the red leaves are of the wild blueberry.

The Denali Highway is 135 miles of gravel road connecting the towns of Cantwell and Paxson and was one of the highlights of our 2015 Alaska trip.

Along the Denali Highway

The Denali Highway connects the towns of Cantwell and Paxson, running east and west from Denali National Park to the Fairbanks-Valdez Highway. It is 135 miles of gravel road and very lightly traveled but all the more enjoyable for that. We traveled the highway one morning in 2015 when we were in Alaska.

Sitka Mountain Ash

Hiking in the mountains in autumn is colorful but the color is provided not by trees but by shrubs and ground cover, blueberries, sedges, vine maples and this plant, the Sitka Mountain Ash. This example was photographed along the Galena-Chain Lakes trail near Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan in the North Cascades.

Taken on a recent hike, our last hike of the year, in the area of Mount Baker. This is near the beginning of the Galena-Chain Lakes Trail, which gives some of the best views of Mount Shuksan and Mount Baker. North Cascades Autumn Color

This was taken on a recent hike in the Twin Lakes area of the North Cascades north of Mount Baker. We were hiking to the top of Winchester Mountain and looks down from the trail to the shoreline of the lower of the Twin Lakes and captures some of the amazing autumn color of the North Cascades as well. The color in this case is provided by wild blueberries which we also enjoyed (the bears enjoy them, too, but we did not see any bears on this hike). ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...

Cascades Sunset

Taken from the road to Twin Lakes in the evening after our first day of hiking, this looks to the southwest (Mount Baker would be to the left of the picture). It was a great day, a beautiful evening and a lovely sunset. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...

Autumn Color Winchester Mountain

The autumn color, especially of the blueberries, is spectacular in the North Cascades. This photo was taken looking back down the Winchester Mountain trail and to the east early in the morning just after sunrise. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...

Twin Lakes

Thought I would post one of son Edward's pictures from our hike in the Twin Lakes area of Mount Baker Wilderness. This picture, taken from the trail to the top of Winchester Mountain, is certainly worthy of being posted and is one of the best photos from our hike. You can see in the picture our vehicle, our campsite between the two lakes and the road (gated) through Skagway Pass to the Lone Jack Mine, an active gold mine. We hiked down the road a ways one evening and found other evidences of mining activity in the area, including an old mine shaft. The photo also shows some of the autumn color in the mountains. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...

Winchester Mountain Sunrise

RHH
16 Oct 2012 311
Taken on the trail to the top of Winchester Mountain from the area where we stopped to photograph the sunrise. I believe that the peak silhouetted by the rising sun is Big Bosom Butte, though I take no responsibility for the name. The main attraction was Mount Baker which we photographed endlessly in the light of the rising sun. I have so many pictures to post that I am going to post several a day for a while. Please do not feel obligated to comment on them all. I know how much work it is to keep up with commenting on the photos of contacts and friends and neither expect nor wish to put my contacts to extra trouble. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...

Great Purple Monkey Flower

Mimulus lewisii is common in the Cascades, but very few were still blooming when we hiked the Twin Lakes area. These were found and photographed along the shore of Lower Twin Lake. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...

Moon over Winchester Mountain

RHH
25 Oct 2012 293
The sun was already up, and we were well along on our hike to the top of Winchester Mountain, but the moon was late in setting and I managed to get this half-way decent picture over the ridge ahead of us. We had to go around this rocky outcrop and through a narrow saddle to reach the west side of the mountain where the trail continued. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...

Winchester Mountain Trail

Taken from the trail not far from the top where the trail, having followed along the south side of Winchester Mountain, crosses a saddle and heads up the west side of the peak. The trailhead with cars parked there is visible near the lake. Our camp is also just visible above the reflections of the trees. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t... ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/10/hiking-in-t...
