This mossy cliff was photographed along the Maroon-Snowmass trail in the Colorado Rockies. I and two of my brothers backpacked there last summer.

Photographed near Newman Lake in Eastern Washington, these Lichens and Mosses were growing on a twig. Lichens are difficult to identify but these are probably Ragbag and Bearded Bone and the Moss probably Twisted Ulota.

The lichens and mosses are about the only things green during the winter here besides the Ponderosas and is seems to be that most of them fruit late in the winter. Most of my photos of lichens are from the winter months, therefore, and ass with these photos include the frost and snow.

These ice-encased lichens were photographed near our home on a winter morning.

As seems to be the case with many of them, these lichens are producing their fruiting bodies late in thee winter. The photo was taken near our home on one of semi-daily walks.

Since lichens and mosses are hard to identify without a microscope and chemicals, I have not made an effort to identify these but just enjoyed them with their beautiful frosted coating, produced by a morning of freezing fog.

Douglas Fir

This was taken while hiking the Lake Ann trail near Mount Baker with my brother Tim on a very wet day. We were on our way back when this dead branch against the background of the other trees and moss caught our attention. The branch and some of the trees are Douglas Fir but I believe the tree in the background on the far right is Mountain Hemlock. In any case the photo catches something of what our forests are like.

This, too, was taken along the trails at Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park, but it is very typical of our northwestern forests.

Taken on Memorial Day hike in the Chuckanuts with son Edward. It was not a very nice day and when finally it began to rain hard we gave it up, hiked out and went to the local coffee shop to warm up. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-chuckanuts.html

During the holidays, my son-in-law who was visiting, my youngest son and I went out to do some photography. Since our time was limited we went to a place in the foothills of the North Cascades about a half hour away where we had seen and photographed a yard full of old vehicles and machinery. The place is not a junkyard, but appears to be private land on which a quite a number of these old vehicles are displayed without any attempt being made to protect them from the elements. The vehicles include old cars and trucks as well as old tractors, old logging and construction equipment, including an old steam shovel, old bulldozers and caterpillars, and old farm equipment. We would have asked permission but there seemed to be no one about and no one said anything about our being there and taking pictures, so we snapped away, though the day was a bit wet and gray. These are some of the pictures we took that afternoon. More pictures here: ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/01/derelict-ma...

This was taken on the Westside Road in Mount Rainier National Park and is, as far as I know, an unnamed waterfall. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/05/mount-raini...

The Pacific Northwest is a great place to live and always green, but there is a reason for all the green - lots of rain. It is hard to convey just how green everything is and just how much moss is to be found in the woods and along the trails. This photo was taken off the Hannegan Pass Road, a gravel Forest Service Road early last spring after snowshoeing up to Artist's Point. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/05/artists-poi...

Licorice Fern

Taken on the Fragrance Lake trail in Larrabee State Park, this gives an idea of what our northwestern forests are like, green and mossy with ferns everywhere. Many thanks to those who identified the fern for me.

Just a rock covered with moss and lichens along the trail as we hiked to Dusty Lake early in the morning. I thought the shot turned out reasonably well and hope you like it too. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/ancient-lak...
