After spending a night at Paint Gap Hills we drove to the southeast end of Big Bend National Park and to Boquillas Canyon, stopping at Dugout Wells on the way. Dugout Wells was a small settlement in the early nineteenth century around a spring. The settlement at that time even had a schoolhouse but now only a windmill is left. The place is a good spot for bird watching and has a short interpretative trail through the Chihuahuan desert. These photos were taken at Dugout Wells and along that trail, this of Opuntia engelmannii, Engelmann's Prickly Pear.

The fourth day of our stay in Big Bend National Park was spent along the east side of the park. The photo was taken from the Dugout Wells area and the Chihuahuan Desert Nature trail there and looks west to the Chisos Mountains.

This windmill is all that is left of an early twentieth century settlement at Dugout Wells in Big Bend National Park.

I don't know if this was an attempt at ranching or whether it was connected with mining in the area, but this abandoned windmill and tank were along the trail to Wall Street Mill, a former gold mining mill. There were other remains in the area, as well, a wagon, a car and some buildings.

This picture was taken in eastern Washington near the town of Medical Lake. We were visiting our son there and had gone for a ride on the unpaved roads to the west of the town when we stopped to take these pictures. They were taken late in the evening not long before sunset. As is evident from the pictures themselves, this part of Washington, east of the mountains is much drier and much more open than the part of the state in which we live. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/05/medical-lak...
