The Western Osprey or Fish Hawk is a large raptor with a six foot wing span (72 cm). A pair of them nested not far from our house and raised two chicks. This is one of the chicks, nearly full grown, on the edge of the nest.

There are large flocks of swans feeding in the fields south of the town where we live. I was out today and took some photos of them both on the ground and in the air. It appeared that the flocks were a mix both of Tundra or Whistling Swans and Trumpeter Swans. I believe the swans in this shots are Trumpeters. As you can see, the sky is rather threatening and by the time I finished taking pictures a storm had moved in and it was beginning to rain. Trumpeter Swans were hunted for their feathers and were hunted nearly to extinction in the early 1900's but have made a comeback and are quite common now. This was taken from the north side of Mount Rainier and has Mount St. Helens in the background. It was shot on flight from Denver to Seattle.

The eagles are in the area nesting and fishing, and while out today I managed to get a few half decent shots. I didn't have my telephoto lens so they are a bit more distant than I would have liked. The second shot, however, is with a cheap telephoto and was taken a few days previous to the others. If I am not mistaken, these are Trumpeter Swans. Taken early last spring in the fields along the river south of the town where we live. Hundreds of these swans were resting and feeding there on their way north.

This is one I've been wanting to post for a while. It was taken in Maritime Heritage Park in Bellingham, Washington. We were photographing a heron there and this young gull came flying through.
