Not much grows in the oldest Redwood graves but ferns, often the Sword Fern shown here. This was photographed along the trail to Stout Grove in Jedediah Smith State Park.

I have a weakness for these tightly curled fern fronds and almost always stop to photograph them even though I have hundreds of photos of them. This one was photographed in Aman Park in western Michigan.

Not sure what fern this is, possibly the Christmas Fern, Polystichum acrostichoides. It was photographed in Dowagiac Woods Nature Sanctuary in southeastern Michigan, where we hiked at the beginning of our long trip home to Washington.

I've always loved these ferns and wished I had room to grow them, but did not know that they were native to Australia until we saw them along the trails in Hypipamee National Park. We would see them again on other occasions, too, but this was the first. I believe this is Platycerium grande, the Common Staghorn Fern..

My wife an I spent the day hiking and doing photography on Whidbey Island. We visited several locations including the forested grounds of the Au Sable Institute near Coupeville, the trails at Hoypus Hill, overlooking Cornet Bay, and the trails at Deception Pass and Goose Rock. We went to the Au Sable Institute to see the Spotted and Ozette Coralroots (the former were in full bloom and the latter were not yet blooming, but we also found one other orchid in bloom, the Heart-leaved Twayblade). We went to Hoypus Hill to see if the Western Coralroots were blooming (they were not). We went to Deception Pass and Goose Rock just to see what we could find, orchids or otherwise, and found plenty to photograph especially on the balds of Goose Rock.
This picture was taken on Hoypus Hill. My wife was photographing the one open flower we found on the Western Coralroots. I figured I would come back in a few weeks and see them fully opened, and wandered about looking for other things to photograph. I love the unfurling fronds of the ferns and began taking pictures of some of them, especially the curled tips, hoping to catch a bit of their unique beauty. This is one of them, which I cannot identify (I am hopeless with ferns), is posted pretty much SOOC, though I did increase the contrast slightly. If anyone can identify the fern I'd be very pleased, but that may be quite difficult without being able to see the whole plant.

Taken on a recent hike along the Thunder Creek Trail. My youngest brother, Tim, and my wife were the other hikers and we did about 10 miles. Took this because I was intrigued by the patterns the fern fronds made. Thanks to Fizgig for the ID.

I am posting this on the run and will be delayed in commenting today since we are going away for the day to celebrate our 37th wedding anniversary and will not be back until later this evening.
I thought this appropriate for our anniversary since I took this while waiting for my wife to finish photographing some flowers. Since I've been waiting for her for 37 years this seemed fitting.
Actually I appreciate her very much. She's a mother of eight and a grandmother of fourteen, can still outhike me, is my constant companion while hiking, and is as beautiful as the day we first met.
Photographed on Hoypus Hill near Cornet Bay on Whidbey Island while hiking and hunting for native orchids and other wildflowers there. We always find something to photograph.
Today we are going to the Chihuly Garden and Glass Exhibition at the Seattle Center. hanks to Karen Porting for the idea.

Fern Frond

I am fascinated by the endless variety of ferns and fantastic shapes of the new fronds as they unfurl. Living here in Washington, we have plenty opportunity to see them and photograph them. This photo was taken on Hoypus Hill in Deception Pass State Park on a hike with my wife and while I was waiting for her to finish up with whatever she was photographing. I do not know, however, which fern this is and would appreciate an ID.

The title really says it all. Taken on the Fragrance Lake trail in Larrabee State Park. I am not sure, however, which fern this is.
