This panorama was taken in Palouse Falls State Park in eastern Washington. The Palouse is a large wheat growing area in eastern Washington and Oregon. The Palouse River flows through the area and here in the state park the river drops 200 feet (61 m) into a large bowl in the basalt formations before heading to its confluence with the Snake River.

This is fairly typical scenery in central eastern Washington - open country, rolling hills, scattered farm buildings and houses and big skies.

Dedicated to my good friend, Valter, the geometry teacher. Perhaps he can find one of the principles of Euclidian plane geometry illustrated in this photo.

A Combination of Combines
21 May 2009 |
|
Different groups of animals are described by "terms of venery," which are collective nouns, many of them very old. Some of the terms are very familiar, such as "school of fish," or "colony of ants," or "pride of lions." Others are unknown such as "murder of crows," "exaltation of larks," or "skulk of foxes." Since we have such words for animals, why not for other things as well, such as combines?
Columbia Plateau

In Explore March 28, 2012, #86.
This photo was taken on our way home from Spokane on the 23rd of March. We followed State Highway 2 across eastern Washington and then across the Cascades and over Stevens Pass. This is rather typical eastern Washington scenery. The area is mostly farm land but the older and smaller farms are gone and only the abandoned buildings remain. These buildings are between Coulee City and Waterville on Highway 2, not far from where the plateau drops off into the Columbia Gorge and with the Cascades in the distance.

This is another photo taken on our recent trip home from Spokane. I was intrigued by the lines and colors and tried numerous shots from this vantage point.

Taken west of Spokane near the town of Medical Lake, it shows many of the reason why we like that part of our state: beautiful skies, endless vistas, clear light and amazing colors. This is posted especially for our good friend, Marti Anderson, who loves that part of our state as much or more than we do.
Ancient Lakes Coulee

Taken from the trail coming down from the south side mesa, this photo shows where the coulee opens up just above the Columbia River gorge (the distant hills are on the other side of the gorge and the river is down below). The distant mesa shows some of the striking geology of the area and the lakes are two of the three named "Ancient Lakes." We hiked around to the right, to the other end of the coulee and then along the distant mesa and out to the trailhead. I should add that the coulee is larger than it appears from the photo. It is over a mile from this point to the end of the mesa.
