Taken from the Lake Ann trail, this looks south toward Mount Baker, the snow covered peak in the background. This is my last photo from the hike to Lake Ann.

The Avalanche Lily, Erythronium montanum, blooms soon after snowmelt and sometimes through the snow. These were photographed along the Lake Ann trail in the North Cascades.

Actually not from the lake itself but from the slopes below the lake (the lake is behind a ridge and this would not be visible), this looks back over the valley through which we hiked. The road to Artist's Point runs along the ridge in the middle left and that is where our trail started. Beyond the ridge, from right to left are the Chain Lakes trail, Herman Peak, Herman Saddle and Table Mountain with more of the road to Artist's Point visible in the snowy slopes below Table Mountain. There is a strange line in the sky above the peaks which I'm sure has something to do with the weather but for which I do not know the explanation though I'm sure brother Tim will be able to explain it.

Last summer we hiked the very popular Lake Ann trail with friends who had recently moved to Washington. We've hiked this trail before, several times in the autumn and never this early. We discovered that Lake Ann was still frozen over and found a lot of snow at the top of the trail just before the lake. The day was not the best either with fairly heavy cloud cover for most of the day. This was one of the better photos from the hike.

These are a few pictures from what was probably our last hike of the season. We've tried to find the time for one more overnight hike before the snow comes in the mountains, but just cannot seem to get away. Lake Ann is a popular and beautiful day hike in the Mount Baker area of the North Cascades.

The purple flowers in this picture are Fireweed or Rosebay Willowherb (Epilobium angustifolium), photographed on a beautiful August morning in the North Cascades.
