Photographed on Winchester Mountain, this is one of our native trees and is found at higher altitudes up to the treeline. It is often stunted and prostrate at higher elevations, but its magnificent cones are always attractive. Its botanical name is Abies lasiocarpa.

This, if I am not mistaken, is a branch and the cones of the Subalpine Fir, Abies lasiocarpa. Often the cones are a brilliant purple color, but can also be this purplish-gray color. These were photographed on Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park. I am trying to become more familiar with the native trees and this is part of that effort.
