Ginko Petrified Forest State Park

This picture was taken at the place were Interstate 90 crosses the Columbia River and near the town of Vantage, Washington. The state park there is known for its vast amount of petrified wood, including whole logs, and for the many different kinds of trees that are found in a petrified state, around fifty different species, including the Ginko. It also boasts a collection of Indian petroglyphs rescued from the waters beneath, since the Columbia has been dammed a little below this point. Pictures of the petrified logs, of the petroglyphs and of the park and its area can be found here: ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/03/ginko-petri... .

Sugar Creek

This is another photo of the area where we camped with family members this past summer. Sugar Creek flows through Turkey Run State Park in central Indiana, through an area of sandstone cliffs, canyons and beautiful woodlands. We spent time tubing, kayaking and swimming the river, which in the summer is quite shallow and slow, ideal for the children. The area is also notable for the many old covered bridges which cross this and other rivers. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/11/turkey-run-...

Wallace Falls

These are the Middle Falls at Wallace Falls State Park. They are the tallest of nine falls and cascades at 265 feet and are on the North Fork of the Wallace River near Gold Bar, Washington. The three main falls are the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls. The others are unnamed. To see the falls some hiking is required, not overly strenuous, but from two to three miles each way. This is around two miles from the trailhead. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/04/wallace-fal...

The picture below shows the Middle Falls of the Wallace River in the North Cascades and Wallace Falls State Park. This new picture shows the base of the falls where the water has hollowed out a a secluded basin from which the water flows away over a series of cascades. Wallace Falls State Park is off State Highway 2 on the west side of the Cascades near the town of Gold Bar. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/04/wallace-fal...

Corallorhiza striata var. striata

These Striped Coralroots are finished blooming now except at higher elevations, but are one of our favorite native orchids, and one we always look for when in bloom. They have the largest and most beautiful flowers of all the Coralroots in our area and are also more difficult to find than many of the others. This photo was taken in Larrabee State Park on the coast and on a rainy day. We found a lot of Striped Coralroots there this year, perhaps due to the late, cold and wet spring. Larrabee is in the Chuckanut Mountains and is a wonderful place both for its wildflowers and for its tide pools. The Coralroots are mycotropic plants, without leaves (which makes them hard to find when not in bloom) and without chlorophyll, deriving their nourishment from the soil through a relationship with a fungus (funny thing with which to have a relationship, but that's the way it is). Interesting plants! More photos and text here: nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2012/05/s...

Fern Frond

I am fascinated by the endless variety of ferns and fantastic shapes of the new fronds as they unfurl. Living here in Washington, we have plenty opportunity to see them and photograph them. This photo was taken on Hoypus Hill in Deception Pass State Park on a hike with my wife and while I was waiting for her to finish up with whatever she was photographing. I do not know, however, which fern this is and would appreciate an ID. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/06/whidbey-isl...

Pacific Madrone

This is one of our native trees. The Pacific Madrone, Arbutus menziesii, grows along the Pacific coast from British Columbia to California. Sadly, it is declining throughout its range. This photo was taken at Clayton Beach in Larrabee State Park and shows the attractive features of this small tree, its green wood and its naturally peeling red bark. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/09/clayton-bea...

Pacific Madrone

I've posted several pictures of this tree recently.. Here's another taken Tuesday from the top of Goose Rock. The tree gets much larger than this and this tree, still young, is just starting to develop the peeling back that is characteristic of the species. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/02/pass-island...
