This memorial, the Cross of Lorraine, is near the Juno Beach Center, one of the British landing sites on D-Day, June 6, 1944. It marks the place where the Free French troops and General De Gaulle came ashore on D-Day.

Pegasus Bridge

One of our reasons for visiting Normandy was to see the D-Day sites, a very appropriate time to do so since it was the eightieth anniversary of the landings on June 6, 1944. After a weekend in the Etretat area we drove down and started our tour in Benouville at the Pegasus Bridge, a vital link over the Caen Canal, taken by British airborne troops early on D-Day. Benouville was the first French village liberated on D-Day. We had coffee at the nearby Cafe Gondree and then explored the area. We learned that the present bridge is a replacement and saw the original bridge on the grounds of a nearby museum.

One of the reasons for visiting Normandy was to see the D-Day sites and our visit took place, fittingly, on the eightieth anniversary of the D-Day landings. The Cafe Gondree and the nearby Pegasus Bridge were the location of the first combat on D-Day and Benouville, the village in which the cafe is located, was the first village liberated by the Thirteenth British Paratroop Battalion. We had coffee at the cafe before exploring the village and the nearby memorial and museum.

Photographed near the Whitehorn campground on the Berg Lake trail, this is the Missouri Goldenrod, Solidago missouriensis and the Red-belted Bumble Bee, Bombus rufocinctus, or so I believe.

Amerorchis rotundifolia

In Explore July 25, 2011, #353. Amerorchis rotundifolia, the Small Round-leaf Orchis, does not grow in Washington State. This plant was photographed in Mount Robson Provincial Park in British Columbia where it grows by the thousands. In the place where this plant was photographed it was impossible to take a step without crushing some of the plants. The photo was taken early in the morning when the flowers were covered with dew or rain from the night before. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/07/a...

Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens

In Explore July 27, 2011, #467. The Large Yellow Lady's Slipper can be found by the thousands in the area of Mount Robson Provincial Park and Jasper National Park, British Columbia. We were a little late this year and though we did seen some flowers, they were not in prime condition. This is an older picture, therefore, taken in the same area. Also, it has been a very busy summer, and on occasion I have been slow in responding to comments and awards. Monday was one of those days. For it I apologize. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/07/c...

In Explore July 29, 2011, #456. Had to post just one more picture of this lovely little orchid, photographed near Kinney Lake on the Berg Lake Trail in Mount Robson Provincial Park. This charming species is more closely related to European orchids than to most North American native orchids. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/07/a...

Platanthera x estesii

This is almost certainly Estes Rein Orchis, Platanthera x estesii, a natural hybrid of Platanthera dilatata and Platanthera stricta, photographed along the Yellowhead Highway in Mount Robson Provincial Park, British Columbia, on a recent trip to Edmonton to see family. This plant was growing in every wet, boggy area along the highway, and though common is nevertheless beautiful with its masses of greenish-white flowers. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/08/p...

Mountain Lady's Slipper

RHH
11 Oct 2011 248
Cypripedium montanum is not as showy as some of our other native Lady's Slippers, but is the most elegant of them all. It is not that rare, but its colors can make it somewhat hard to spot when it is growing in dappled sunlight among other plants and small trees. These flowers were photographed In British Columbia at a site that was scheduled to be bulldozed for road construction. Whether or not that has actually happened I do not know, but there were many flowers there that seemed to be part of a hybrid population between this species (if it is indeed the species) and the Large Yellow Lady's Slipper, Cypripedium parviflorum. For more information on this species see my blog: nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2010/08/m...

In Explore March 21, 2012, #388. These are adult Moon Jellies, Aurelia labiata, photographed at the Vancouver Aquarium. This aquarium has the best display of Jellyfish that I have seen anywhere. They are beautifully displayed with good lighting and though never easy to photograph, the Aquarium has done all it could to make them accessible to someone carrying a camera. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2010/12/vancouver-a...

Gone to seed

This was photographed along the Berg Lake trail in Mount Robson Provincial Park, British Columbia. I was intrigued by the unusual way in which it carried its seeds. I had no idea what this was, but it has been identified by Fizgig, the wizard of plants, as Mitella nuda, the Naked Mitrewort. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-berg-la...
